Hi! That’s me, Holly with the kids in Tabora, Tanzania where I volunteered for HAPO (Health Action Promotion Organization) whose primary objective is to help impoverished families by getting their begging street children back into school and the parents generating enough income to fully provide for their children. It’s a real live sustainable development program.
Volunteer Africa Partner: HAPO (Health Action Promotion Organization)
HAPO is a small organization which was established after 8 years working with Volunteer Africa founder Simon Headington. In 2000 a group of Tanzanians established HAPO and registered the organization under the societies ordinance, registration number SO 11619/12. HAPO’s project aims to benefit those children in Tabora who are vulnerable, or living on the streets. Many of these children are not attending school – losing the best chance they have to breaking the poverty trap and getting a good education.
The Health Action Promotion Organization (HAPO) has already launched the initial pilot project with 13 kids all of whom you have seen on this website. HAPO is currently seeking additionally fundind that will support 27 more children who have been found orphaned or vulnerable, are having difficulties in school, or whose parents or guardians are currently unable to provide for their needs. Most of these children aged 6-13 have been orphaned by parents who died of AIDS. Each of them has been identified by the community as a child at-risk. Many of them need a place to go after school like the HAPO Drop-In Centre so as to prevent them from begging on the streets, or worse, being victims of abuse from the crowd they keep in impoverished neighborhoods.
The HAPO Vision:
- HAPO children attending school regularly, enjoying and wanting to learn, and furthermore succeeding in school
- Parents or guardians to take responsibility for the welfare and well-being of their children
- Teachers in the municipal to be trained in the C-to-C approach (number of teachers is around 70) so that all school children are motivated to learn/attend school, are actively learning, and are putting into practice what they learn
